Oscar at The Crown

I recently headed into central London to photograph Oscar at the Crown, a dystopian dance party musical inspired by Oscar Wilde, reality TV chaos and full-blown nightclub energy.

Part theatre show, part nightclub, part immersive experience, the production throws you straight into a neon-lit futuristic bunker underneath Tottenham Court Road, where the music pumps, the drama pulses and the world apparently survives on jaw-dropping vocals and the complete works of Oscar Wilde. Fun, right?

Created in Brooklyn before making its way to London, the show features an original electropop score by Andrew Barret Cox (composer to Drag Race royalty), with the whole production designed as a 360 spectacle that constantly pulls the audience into the middle of the action.

The brief was to cover a mix of theatre photography, production stills and immersive event coverage, capturing not just the performances themselves but also the atmosphere of the show and the audience interaction happening throughout the space.

Visually, there was so much to work with throughout the production: neon lighting, smoke, movement, reflective surfaces and a set design that constantly shifted the feeling of the room depending on where you were standing. It felt much closer to photographing a live music event or immersive nightclub experience than a traditional theatre production most of the time.
